  • The bark contains high levels of saponins, which foaming agents are found in several other plant species used as shampoos or soaps. Saponins containing plants have a long history of use as mild cleaning agents. Saponins from the plant's pods have been traditionally used as a detergent, and in Bengal for poisoning fish; they are documented to be potent marine toxins.
  • Shikakai powder has been used for centuries as a natural hair cleanser. It promotes hair growth and root strength, and gently detangles. It is mild and has a natural low pH, which conditions hair to be soft and lustrous. It does not strip the hair of its natural oils, and its use has also been known to prevent dandruff.
  • Mix the powder with water to create a paste and work it through the hair. The paste will lather moderately, and should be left on the hair for about 5 minutes. Henna or amla powders can be added to the paste to give a boost of color to the hair. HOW TO USE SHIKAKAI PODS FOR HAIR There are several ways to use Shikakai pods. Method 1 Soak 2 to 3 Shikakai pods in a bowl of water with 2 pieces of Amla and 3 Reetha pods. Allow the mixture to sit overnight. In the morning boil the mixture until the amount of liquid is reduced to ¼ of the original amount. Allow the liquid to cool then mash the pods and sieve the mixture through a fine muslin cloth. The solution is now ready to use. Wash you hair with the solution. It may not produce much lather as it is a mild cleanser. Shikakai will clean both your scalp and your hair. Shikakai controls dandruff while keeping hair healthy and strong. Method 2 Grind the shikakai pods. Seive the ground mixture to remove any unground pieces. The result is pure shikakai powder. Soak a teaspoon of this powder in water. Use this solution to wash your scalp and hair. Method 3 Place 5 pieces of Shikakai in the hair oil that you normally use. Leave the pods in the oil and the benefits of the Shikakai will absorb into the oil. Continue to use your hair oil as you normally would.
